Northville Rowing Wins at Midwest
Northville Rowing has Great Showing and Earns Gold at Midwest Championships on its Home Lake
Northville Rowing recently competed at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association (MSRA) Championship Regatta held May 13-14 at Kensington Metropark in Milford, Michigan. The event location was especially exciting for Northville Rowing since it was relocated from Nashport, Ohio to home turf on Kent Lake and positively impacted the local community. This annual regional event, which this year hosted 48 high school teams from seven states, qualifies the top rowers to compete at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championship Regatta or the USRowing Youth National Championships. Northville Rowing qualified 17 boats to the “A” Finals on Sunday, the most in program history.
The power team of Benjamin Kemnitz (Junior) and Daniel DeAlmeida (Sophomore) earned gold for the Mustangs in the Mens Varsity Pair with a finish of 5:36.5. Earning bronze in the Women’s 2nd Varsity 8 boat with a finish of 5:41.6 were Riley Miller, Kendall Moeller (Juniors) coxswain Nila Muthusamy, Mahita Parulekar, Allison Phillips, Olivia Spradlin, Claire Collyer, Holly Roberts (Sophomores), and Megan Gibbons (Freshman). Also earning bronze with a finish of 6:01.2 were Parulekar, Collyer, Phillips and Gibbons in the Women’s Jr 4x.
Many of the additional seventeen qualifying boats earned respectable finishes of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places. In the overall team standings, Northville placed 13th of 48 schools, which is very positive given the experience levels of much of the competition. Head Coach Nick Bickes stated, "We've had a great season so far and the team has accomplished a lot. This has been a big year for our program, but also for rowing in southeast Michigan. The addition of the Kathryn Bennett Race Course at Kensington Metropark has been a great experience for our kids, and it will continue to make a difference in youth rowing in our community. There is still work to be done as we look forward to the State Championship on May 21st.”
