Northville School Board Honors Students, Approves 1 Expulsion

Highlights from Northville's school board meeting Tuesday night.

Editor's note: A correction has been added to the last brief about a student's expulsion. The expelled student's parents have 90 days to petition for reinstatement.

Eagle Scouts honored

Three Eagle Scouts were recognized by Northville's school board at its meeting Tuesday night.

Eric Karinen of Novi earned Eagle Scout status for his efforts to collect personal hygiene products for .

Daniel Ondrus of Northville earned the achievement for logging more than 330 hours to remodel the interior foyer of the Northville American Legion hall.

Benjamin Potter Thomas of Northville was honored for collecting personal hygiene products and food for Northville Civic Concern.

Girls bowling team honored

The board also recognized's girls bowling team, which placed 7th in the state.

Team members include:

  • Esha Bedi, captain who also placed 27th in the state singles event

The team is coached by Jerry Harris, Mike Sugiyama, Pat Ramsey and Ian Lovdahl.

Girls basketball team honored for district title

Northville High School's girls basketball team in a match up against Canton - the first district title the school has won in 26 years.

"We had a lot of ups and downs in our season," coach Todd Gudith said. He added that the girls who earned the title are laudable off the court too. He said they are involved in other sports, serve as class officers and volunteer. In addition, the team GPA is 3.62.

The team is also coached by Alan Kruck and Pete Wright.

Student expulsion approved

Northville's school board approved the expulsion of a fifth grade student .

His parents were not in attendance to appeal the expulsion at the meeting. Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher said that the family had participated in previous meetings with district officials. School board president Dottie Garrity said that it is the district's policy to have all expulsion recommendations come before the school board.

In this case, following an investigation by the district, it was determined the student should be expelled. The student's parents can petition for reinstatement after 90 days.

Gallagher added that, "According to Michigan School Code, an individual who was in grade 5 or below at the time of the expulsion shall not be reinstated before the expiration of 90 school days after the date of expulsion. After that period of time, parent(s) have the right to petition a public school district to request reinstatement."
