Northville Scores Lower on 2013 Michigan Merit Exam

The 2013 scores for the district are lower across the board compared to last year's averages.

Northville Public Schools district's scores from the 2013 Michigan Merit Exam (MME) dropped slightly compared to 2012, but the district's 2013 scores continue to exceed state averages.

The MME assesses students in grade 11 and eligible students in grade 12 based on Michigan high school standards. It is administered each March, and consists of three components:

  • ACT Plus Writing® college entrance examination
  • WorkKeys® job skills assessments in reading, mathematics, and "locating information"
  • Michigan-developed assessments in mathematics, science, and social studies
>>See this year's results below.

The scores, released Monday, show that the percentage of students who scored either proficient or advanced on the 2013 MME decreased in every subject. The biggest decrease was in social studies. In 2012, 66 percent of Northville students were proficient or advanced in social studies; in 2013, that number dropped 8 percentage points.

Scores also dipped by three points in reading, dropping from 83 percent proficient in 2012 to 80 percent proficient in 2013.

The ACT average, while higher than the state average of 19.7, also dropped slightly from 24.3 last year to 24.1 this year.
