Novi resident Amber Flynn caught a photo of this coyote.
She said she was surprised to see the coyote in the middle of Novi neighborhood Jamestown Green, located between Ten and Eleven Mile roads and Meadowbrook and Taft roads.
Coyotes can be bold creatures so remain cautious around them.
The Novi Police Department offers the following tips to help minimize potential conflicts with coyotes:
- Never approach, touch or attempt to tame a coyote. It is in the best interest of both coyotes and humans if coyotes retain their instinctive fear of people.
- Never intentionally feed a coyote because they will learn the pattern and come closer to humans. Eliminate all outside food sources, especially pet foods.
- Typically, coyotes feed at night or early morning and rarely hunt during the day. Therefore, put garbage out the morning of pickup day and not the night before. Coyotes will come closer for garbage in an effort to find food.
- Remove wood and brush piles since they are good habitats for rats and mice and may attract coyotes looking for a food source. This is especially important for those who live next to a wood line.
- Do not allow pets to roam free when coyotes have been spotted in the area. Consider keeping pets indoors or accompany them outside, especially at night. If small pets are left alone, coyotes may not differentiate between small game (their food source) and small dogs or cats.
