Novi Self Defense Center Instructor Inducted Into Midwest Women's Martial Arts Hall of Fame

Chris Szelap, co-owner of the , has been inducted into the Midwest Women's Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Szelap will officially be inducted in October, where she will receive her award for her continued contribution to the martial arts community.

Szelap is a fifth-degree blackbelt and has taught Isshinryu Karate since 1992.

She owns the Self Defense Center with her husband, 'Mr. Z' Szelap, at which they teach students six days a week in addition to attending national and local tournaments with them.

  • One of the Top 5 Female Instructors Nationally in 1999, chosen by the National Isshinryu Hall of Fame board
  • A Top Contributor to Isshinryu Karate in 2003 and 2010
  • Top Female Instructor in the Nation in 2010, chosen by the National Isshinryu Hall of Fame

The Family Self Defense Center was also chosen as one of the top dojos in the nation for its contributions to Isshinryu in 2011.
