Novi Pompon Teams Earn Grand Champion Awards

The teams competed at the Mid-American Pom Summer camp last month.

The Novi varsity and junior varsity pompon team participated in the Mid-American Pom Summer camp in June at Davenport University in Grand Rapids. 

Out of 12 teams, both the Novi varsity and junior varsity pompon teams earned the coveted Grand Champion award this year. The Grand Champion award is obtained by receiving first place ratings in original routine, high kick and speed learning categories.

The varsity team is led by senior captains Amy Liang and Amy Cao and junior captain Yianna Bordeau. Other members of the squad include juniors Bailey Borycki, Kela Brant, Madison Cojei, Karla De La Cruz, Lauren DiPaola, Kelly Dubay, Olivia Ghannam, Lexa Giragosian, Sara Lehman; sophomores Erica Borst, Lauren Chapman, Alicia DesOrmeau, Rachel Estfan, Angela Lazzara, Chandler Link, Lauren Miller; and freshmen Karen Cao, Briana Marderosian, and Nadia Tarducci.

The Novi varsity pompon team is led by head coach Jacquie St. Antoine. Varsity members Madison Cojei, Amy Cao, Yianna Bordeau and Lexa Giragosian made the Mid-American Pom All-Star Team and will have the opportunity to perform at the Holiday Bowl Game in San Diego. 

The junior varsity squad also earned a Grand Champion title. The junior varsity team is led by sophomore captain Lindsay Kawada and freshman captain Payton Balconi. Additional members include Madison Ampunan, Gaby Broche, Grace Choi, Kendall Gulau, Bridgette Kleino, Erika Matel, Autumn Scott, and Isabelle Torossian. The junior varsity squad received the "Peppy Pom" award on the final day of camp for being the team with the most spirit. The team is coached by head coach Colleen O'Brien.

The Novi varsity and junior varsity teams will be attending the Mid-American Pompon High Kick Championship in the fall.

In the meantime the will be performing at local events and athletic competitions. The teams will be holding a youth pompon clinic in September for those students in elementary and middle school. They will learn a routine and have an opportunity to perform. More information will be available as September nears at http://www.novi.k12.mi.us/athletics
