The City of Novi’s Nine Mile Pathway Project has been recognized by the American Public Works Association – Michigan Chapter (APWAMC) as the Project of the Year in the category of Non-Motorized Transportation. The goal of the Nine Mile Pathway, located along the north side of Nine Mile Road between Meadowbrook and Haggerty Roads and completed in fall 2011, was to connect residents who live in the city’s most densely populated area with other non-motorized facilities, including the nearby I-275 Metro Trail. The award recognizes the extensive communication and cooperation between neighboring residents and City of Novi staff who worked to reduce the impact to adjacent residential properties by eliminating a number of easements and tree removals, while retaining as many natural features as possible. The one-mile long, six-foot wide pathway meanders through several wooded areas that provide a natural buffer from Nine Mile Road traffic.

This award exemplifies Novi’s commitment to encouraging healthy, active lifestyles. Currently, the City has more than 225 miles of pathways and sidewalks. In 2011, the City adopted a Non-Motorized Master Plan, which provides recommendations for in-road facilities, sidewalks, trails, road crossings, design standards, priority considerations, funding and non-motorized routes. The plan also includes an expanded implementation strategy to ensure efforts to provide a safe, convenient, and enjoyable environment for bicyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorized users.

The APWAMC is comprised of public works professionals who plan, build, maintain and improve Michigan communities and contribute to a higher and sustainable quality of life. To learn more about the City of Novi and to view existing non-motorized facilities, visit cityofnovi.org.
