Novi to Celebrate Japanese Friendship With Cherry Tree Plantings in May

The city has been chosen as one of many in the U.S. to recognize the two countries' ongoing relationship.

This May, Novi will be participating in a centennial celebration of the friendship between the U.S. and Japan by planting cherry trees and hosting several events celebrating Japanese culture, The Oakland Press reports.

More than 3,000 cherry trees were sent to Washington, D.C. from Tokyo in 1912 as a symbol of friendship, the article says.

Events will be held on Novi starting May 12 with an official planting ceremony on May 19, according to the article.
