Oakland County Commissioners Honor Memory of Michigan Civil Rights Activist

The commissioners recognized Viola Liuzzo at their last meeting.

On March 25, 1965, Viola Liuzzo, a civil rights activist, wife and mother from Michigan, fought for the right to vote for African Americans as part of the Selma to Montgomery Marches in Alabama. Her life was cut short on Highway 80 when members of the KKK shot into her vehicle, killing her for having an African American man in her car and for her activism for Civil Rights.

Commissioners Mattie McKinney Hatchett and Kathy Crawford presented a proclamation at their last meeting to Sally Prado-Liuzzo, a Novi resident, in honor of her late mother. Prado-Liuzzo recently moved back to Michigan in the hope of teaching others about her mother's legacy and the importance of the Civil Rights Movement.
