Resurfacing of Grand River Avenue Proceeds On Schedule

The construction is expected to be completed in September.

The resurfacing of Grand River Avenue from Novi Road to Meadowbrook Road appears to be complete, but the resurfacing still has another step to go.

The second lane of Grand River has been reopened between Novi and Meadowbrook roads, but just for now.

That's just the first layer of asphalt, or the leveling course, of the road. The final course of asphalt still needs to be put down, according to Craig Bryson, public infromation officer for the Road Commission for Oakland County.

Bryson said there could be several weeks between the first course or the second course and the road between Meadowbrook and Novi roads will remain open during that time.

In the meantime, the construction crew has moved down Grand River Avenue to work on the first layer of asphalt between Meadowbrook and Haggerty roads, Bryson said.

Construction began in March and is expected to be done in September.

The summer construction on the road includes base repair and the application of four inches of new asphalt to the road. Safety improvements are also part of the project, including the addition or extension of right-turn lanes at several locations, the addition of three-foot paved shoulders and the reconstruction of pedestrian crosswalks to comply with current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Concrete curbs and gutters will be added where needed to ensure proper drainage.

The work is being done by Cadillac Asphalt of Clarkston.

The total project cost is expected to be approximately $4.1 million. Of that, just over $3.3 million is being paid for with federal funds. RCOC is contributing $464,000, while the city is adding $272,000 and Oakland County General Government (through the Tri-Party Program) is putting in $64,000.
