Legally Drunk Woman Arrested for Hit & Run; Novi Garage Burglarized

The following information was supplied by the Novi Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

A woman was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident on May 27 at 2:30 a.m., according to a police report.

The woman who reported the crime told police she was at the stop sign on Old Novi Road about to go east onto 13 Mile Road when she was struck by an Chevrolet Impala turning onto Old Novi from Lakeview Market, causing damage to the right rear bumper of her Ford Focus.

After her car was struck, both women pulled into the Lakeview Bar parking lot, the report said. Once parked, the driver who hit the woman got out and told her she had insurance. The woman noticed that the other driver appeared to be drunk, so she told her she was going to call the police, the report said. According to the police report, when the suspect heard that, she waived her finger and said, “that was not going to happen.” The suspect then drove away, leaving the area without providing any information, the report said.

Based on the information they had, the Novi Police then tracked down the driver to her house, the report said. When the officer knocked on door, the woman wasn’t wearing any pants and said she was sleeping, the report said. The officer asked her where the Impala was, and she said it was in the garage, the report said. After she got dressed, she opened the garage, revealing that the Impala parked angled sideways with fresh damage on front right bumper, the report said.

When the officer asked her what happened, the woman said she struck a guardrail earlier and noted she had been home for five hours, the report said. However, the officer noticed hood of car was still warm to the touch, the report said.

When asked if she was at Lakeview Market, the woman said she was earlier but had been home for multiple hours, the report said. The officer could smell intoxicants on the woman and said that her eyes appeared glassy, so he performed the standard sobriety tests, the report said. According to the report, the woman had a blood-alcohol level of 0.147, which is above Michigan’s legal driving limit of 0.08. The woman was then placed under arrest on charges of operating a car while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, the report said.

Garage burglarized

A homeowner on Wimbleton Way reported that his garage was burglarized sometime overnight from May 26-27, according to a police report. A set of golf clubs, worth $3,500, and a GPS, worth $200 were stolen, the report said.

The man said he closed the garage around 11:30 p.m. and noticed it was open and the items were missing around 9 a.m. The police could not find any forced entry, the report said. The homeowner told police that the garage door code box on the outside of the garage was flipped up this morning and that his son’s car was left open, which had a garage opener in it, the report said. The police report said it is unclear which one the suspect used to gain entrance.

According to the report, the suspect also attempted to take a large slot machine that was at the rear of the garage, but it appeared to be too heavy and was left behind but slightly moved. The suspect did steal the key to the machine, the report said.

The officer was able to recover several fingerprints from the slot machine, which have been sent to the lab for investigation, the report said.
