Lake Orion Driver Hurt By Flying Road Sign Hit By Another Driver: Cops

A Lake Orion​ driver was seriously injured by a flying road sign Tuesday morning​ in Orion Township, officials said.

ORION TOWNSHIP, MI — A Lake Orion driver was seriously injured by a flying road sign Tuesday morning in Orion Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said a driver veered into the center lane on northbound Lapeer Road near Waldon Road and hit the road sign at 7:45 a.m.

The road sign became dislodged and went airborne into oncoming southbound traffic, officials said.

The 31-year-old Lake Orion man was driving a Volkswagen Passat south on Lapeer Road when the road sign smashed through his windshield and hit him, officials said.

The Passat then veered off the road and came to rest next to a tree near Waldon Road, officials said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in serious, but stable condition, officials said.

He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, officials said.

Oakland County officials asked the public for help identifying the vehicle and its driver that hit the road sign. Officials do not have any details about the vehicle or its driver, as they continue to investigate the crash.
