3 Charged In Deadly Washtenaw County Shooting, Kidnapping

Multiple news reports said the incident stemmed from a child custody dispute.

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI — Three people were charged Friday in connection with a child abduction and triple shooting that left two dead in Washtenaw County.

Jennifer Lyn Bernhard, 48, and Stevie Ray Smith, 74, were shot dead at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night inside their home on Nollar Bend Road near US-23 and North Territorial Road in Northfield Township, according to police.

Bernhard’s husband, 52-year-old Jeffrey Bernhard, was also shot and taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in stable condition and expected to be ok, according to police.

Investigators also learned that two children, ages 9 and 4, were taken from the home, according to police.

The three suspects, 42-year-old Shuvonne Vinson, 37-year-old Gregory Callhan and 60-year-old Keith Finley, were all been charged with:

  • Two counts of open murder (punishable by up to life in prison)
  • One count of assault with intent to murder (punishable with up to life in prison)
  • One count of home invasion in the first degree (punishable by up to 20 years in prison)
  • Two counts of kidnapping – child enticement (punishable by up to life in prison)
  • One count of conspiracy to commit murder (punishable by up to life in prison)
  • One count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping – child enticement (punishable by up to life in prison)
  • One count of conspiracy to commit home invasion in the first degree (punishable by up to 20 years in prison)
  • One count of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent (punishable by up to 5 years in prison)
  • One count of stolen property - receiving and concealing a motor vehicle (punishable by up to 5 years in prison)
  • One count of felony firearm (punishable by 2 years in prison, to be served consecutively to any other sentence)

Vinson was also charged with four counts of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer (punishable by up to 2 years in prison), one count of carrying a concealed weapon (punishable by up to 5 years in prison), one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person (punishable by up to 5 years in prison) and one count of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person (punishable by up to 5 years in prison).

Finley was also charged with one additional count of possession of a firearm by an ineligible person (punishable by up to 5 years in prison).

All three suspects, who are all from Detroit, were placed in the Washtenaw County Jail. Vinson and Callhan were denied bond and Finley is expected to be arraigned Saturday.

After the shooting, police launched a manhunt and arrested the suspects and found the two children in Ypsilanti Township, according to police.

The children were alive and evaluated at a nearby hospital, according to police.

Multiple news reports said one of the kids was in foster care at the home and that the shooting and kidnapping were the result of some kind of child custody dispute.
