A developer proposed bringing two new fast food restaurants, as well as a new golf facility and hotel to Canton Township.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI — Two new fast food drive-thru restaurants and a new recreation facility may be coming to Canton Township, according to township documents.
The Canton Township Planning Commission listened to a real estate developer who wants to put a Chick-fil-A and Portillo’s on Ford Road between Interstate 275 and Lotz Road, according to township documents.
The Tile Shop, which currently exists at the location would remain in place, according to township documents.

The developer also submitted plans for a new Topgolf indoor/outdoor driving range and recreation facility near Interstate 275 and Warren Road, as well as a new four-story hotel in the middle of the site, according to township documents.
Steve Robinson, vice president of acquisitions and development for Broder Sachse Real Estate, told the commission during a Dec. 18 meeting he wants crews to start the project this summer and would hope to open the facilities in spring 2025.

The two new restaurants on Ford Road would mean more traffic in an area that's already plagued by heavy traffic, so proposed plans called for expanding the site's driveway to three lanes and adding a traffic signal at the site drive intersection at Ford Rd, according to township documents.
Other proposed improvements on Ford Road include installing a westbound deceleration right-turn lane at the site drive and converting the center lane west of the site drive to a left-turn lane into the site, according to township documents.
Those changes would need to approved by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Even with those changes, commissioners still voiced concerns over traffic and adding another traffic light on Ford Road between Interstate 275 and Lotz Road. Most commissioners said they wanted to see the impact traffic study before making a final decision.
Despite those concerns, commissioners did unanimously agree to send the proposal to the board of trustees for a first reading. If commissions ultimately approve the plans, they will go to the board for consideration before the planning commission can approve a site plan.
Robinson noted during the meeting the plans have been revised several times to try and meet township officials' approval. He also said he plans to complete the project in one phase.
There are currently 13 Chick-fil-A restaurants serving the metro Detroit area. There is only one other Michigan Topgolf facility, which is located in Auburn Hills.
