I hope that you are surviving the cold temperatures and looking forward to a bit warmer weather early in the week before the potential of more snow. I, like most of our kiddos, am looking forward to getting back outside for recess.
I appreciate the patience demonstrated by those picking up and dropping off students during arrival and dismissal last week. This was a challenge with two bus routes being paused. It will continue to be just as challenging next week, as Route 5 Bus 61 PURPLE BUS, and Route 29 Bus 93P BLUE BUS will be paused once again.

In order to create safer access to our parking lot during dismissal this week, I have requested the help of the Canton Police Department. They are always willing to help unless they are involved in another emergency situation. Based on past experience, it is likely that they will close the left turn lane on north bound Haggerty Rd. as they did during food distribution two summers ago. Regardless of traffic support by the Canton PD, I encourage all families who are picking up their children at dismissal enter our parking lot turning right from south bound Haggerty Rd. this week. Doing so will definitely increase the safety of all our motorists as we navigate the increase in traffic. The good news is that this is the final week two routes are planned to be paused at the same time for the remainder of the year!
Kindergarten and 1st grade parents who are interested in using the back pick-up and drop-off loop during arrival and dismissal are encouraged to do so.
Benefits:
-
Minimizes the need for parents to wait for any of the limited number of parking spaces in the front to open in order to park and walk your child to their classroom door.
-
Eliminates the need for parents to get out of their car during arrival and dismissal.
-
Allows for all kindergarten and first grade students to wait for the start of school inside the school instead of outside in the cold.
-
Builds student independence
Possible Challenges:
-
Increases the number of cars in the back loop.
-
Slight delays caused by parents new to the process getting the hang of the new routine.
Process for Kindergarten and 1st Grade Students using the Back Loop during ARRIVAL:
-
Follow the traffic to the back of the school, around the parked cars, and along the orange coned area.
-
Pull up as far forward in the loop as possible.
Adults will be present to help students exit their car.
Student finds the adult wearing the bright yellow vest.
The adult with the yellow vest will direct kindergarten and first grade students to door #25.
The adult at door #25 will direct students to an adult in the library (center of the hallway)
The adult in the library will direct students to their classroom door, where they sit and wait to enter. (Kindergarten and 1st grade students are already familiar with how to get to their classroom from the library, but we have an adult placed their just in case.
Process for Kindergarten and 1st Grade Students using the Back Loop during DISMISSAL:
-
Parent should come prepared with a 8 ½ X 11 paper with their child’s name and teacher’s name printed on it so the supervising adult can see it.
-
Follow the traffic to the back of the school, around the parked cars, and along the orange coned area.
-
Pull up as far forward in the loop as possible.
-
Adults will make a connection with each parent by looking at their sign, or asking which student you are here to pick up.
The Adult will call for your child using their walkie talkie.
Adults will be present to help students move from their classroom to the pick-up loop.
Adults will help your child get into your car. (At first, parents may want to exit your car and help children see you. This will be helpful as young children learn a new process.. You may help to get them into the car.
Once you children are in the car, follow the traffic off school property.
Helpful Hint:
-
Let your child’s teacher know if you plan to use the back loop. Your communication will remind the teacher to help your child learn the new process, and make sure the teacher is listening for your child’s name when called.
Kindergarten and 1st grade parents wishing to continue to walk their children to and pick them up from their outside door may continue to follow the same procedure they have been. I am asking for two ways that parents using the front parking lot can help this week:
-
Motorists are asked to not to stop in the center of the front parking lot unless you see that someone is about to leave a parking space. It is important to continue to circle the lot or park in the temporary lot on the front playground. Stopping in the center causes a significant back-up of both cars and buses, and it causes increased safety difficulties for students and parents walking to the building. Please note that there are also 4 short term parking spaces available on the other side of the flag pole.
-
Though seeing the connections our parents are making with each other during arrival and dismissal warms my heart, I ask that THIS WEEK any additional conversations after students enter their classroom in the morning or gathered at dismissal be taken to a local coffee shop so that the next round of parents looking for a parking space can find one. Your connections with each other are exactly what our Eriksson community is all about, however, your attention to this matter will help us all get through this challenging traffic week.. I thank you all for your understanding and cooperation.
