Plymouth Clerk Linda Langmesser Resigns, Retires Following Facebook Post Flap

Resignation ends longtime Plymouth clerk career after more than 30 years with the city.

PLYMOUTH, MI — Less than a week after making an anti-Muslim post on her Facebook page, Plymouth City Clerk Linda Langmesser has resigned her longtime position and retired, according to Plymouth City Manager Paul Sincock.

Langmesser’s remarks were made in response to an article in The Atlantic written by former White House staffer Rumana Ahmed, a Muslim, chronicling her brief stay in President Donald Trump’s administration. Ahmed’s article didn’t tell the truth about the Trump administration, “because that’s what they do in their culture,” Langmesser allegedly wrote, according to a report in the Plymouth Observer. The post attributed to the city clerk, which has since been deleted, said Ahmed should “be sent to where she can worship the Koran.”

The city launched an investigation of the remarks early last week. Langmesser, who served the city for more than three decades, made the decision to resign and retire on Friday, Sincock said. The investigation was not completed prior to her announcement, he added.

Maureen Brody was appointed interim clerk until “we do an evaluation of the position,” Sincock said. He did not give a timeline as to when a permanent replacement for Langmesser would be selected. Brody had been the city’s deputy clerk for approximately 20 years.
