Unknown Person Steals $17,000 from Plymouth Township Man's Bank Account

Police: The theft happened over two days at three different bank branch locations.

A Plymouth Township man on Dogwood Court reported his identity stolen last week, according to a police report. 

The man told police that an unknown person pretending to be him withdrew $6,500 from his savings account on June 13. The person provided identification to the First Merit Bank in Royal Oak and was able to withdraw the money, the report said.

Later the same day, around 4:29 p.m., someone withdrew an additional $7,000 from the First Merit Bank branch in Southfield, the report said.

A third transaction took place on June 14 around 5:54 p.m. at the First Merit Bank branch in Grosse Pointe, the report said.

The man told police that he discovered the theft on June 20 while checking his banking. The man said that he had no idea who might have done it, and that none of his personal identification or banking documents had recently gone missing, according to the report.

The man told police that he had contacted the bank to close the account and get a new account number and the bank would reimburse his money, the report said.
