Volunteers Send Holiday Cards To Substance Abuse Patients In Plymouth Addiction Treatment Center

The cards were inscribed with everything from children's drawings to touching messages of hope.

PLYMOUTH, MI The holidays can be an incredibly stressful time for everyone - but especially those battling substance abuse issues. It's lonely, scary, and a struggle just to make it to the next day - never mind handle the anxiety surrounding family and finances this time of year.

Well, substance abuse patients at the Personalized Nursing LIGHT House, Inc. have something special to smile about this holiday season, as they were the recipients of a special delivery of holiday cards with touching messages from people all across the county, according to a press release.

Lisa Rutledge came up with the holiday card idea at a November meeting of Thrive, a division of the Garden City Community Coalition, which brings alcohol and drug prevention initiatives to the community. Not only did Thrive hop on board, so did groups including The Garden City Library, Senior Center, Family Resource Center, Community Resources Department and the Thrive Youth Coalition. People of all ages wrote holiday cards inscribed with everything from children's drawings to inspiring messages of hope.

The batch of cards were delivered to Personalized Nursing LIGHT House, Inc., a substance abuse treatment facility located in Plymouth on Dec. 19 - and the cards were a hit with patients. “These cards are greatly appreciated by the people we serve,” Joseph Paliwoda, Co-Founder and CEO of PNLH, said in a statement. "Knowing people volunteered their time to express hope and encouragement will be inspirational to those in our treatment programs over the holidays."

Megan Sheeran, the Thrive Coordinator, added in a statement, “The individuals in treatment this holiday are fighting for their lives, many without contact from their loved ones. The goal of this initiative is to show these individuals that there are people that care about them in the community and that there is hope; to motivate them to keep fighting the fight.”
