For those who have traded in dusty hardcovers for sleek e-reader devices, the Rochester Hills Public Library still can cater to your need for fresh reads and new music—without fines for overdue media.
Here are five resources, offered through the Rochester Hills Public Library, that allow library members to download or borrow books, magazines or music to their e-readers. Keep in mind a valid Rochester Hills Public Library card is required for these services.
1. OverDrive
OverDrive is one of several e-book and e-audiobook distribution devices utilized by the Rochester Hills Public Library. Library members with Kindle devices—or a variety of other e-readers—can check OverDrive's selections at the Rochester Hills Public Library here. Need help getting started? The Metro Net Library Consortium has created this helpful guide.
2. 3M Cloud Library
3M is another service supported by the Rochester Hills Public Library. You can view the Rochester Hills Public Library's 3M selections here. For those who need help getting started, there is one video showing how to use the app, and another showing how to transfer the e-books.
3. Freading
Freading is another service offered through your local library. This requires some subtle tweaks to your Kindle Fire HD and won't work on traditional (e-ink screen) Kindles to install, but the library has provided a step-by-step guide to install the Freading app and get started reading books. View Freading's offerings for Rochester Hills Public Library members here.
4. Freegal
The Rochester Hills Public Library, through music distribution service Freegal, offers legal, DRM-free MP3 downloads of more than 10,000 record labels, meaning you're free to keep your favorite tracks on your MP3 player or e-reader of choice. Library users have a weekly download limit, which is displayed on the site. You can view the music library here.
5. Zinio
Download and read an unlimited selection of magazines free of charge through Zinio, another service offered through the library. You can view the list of publications here. The best part of Zinio is that you're able to "keep" the downloaded magazines.
