Cash Mob Excitement Brings Shoppers Downtown

The deals are ongoing until 7:30 tonight, Rochester.

Guided by a text message every 15 minutes, shoppers ventured to downtown Rochester on Thursday afternoon in search of deals, despite the ongoing construction.

More than 370 people had signed up for the first Rochester Cash Mob, which was happening from 2 to 7:30 p.m. around downtown.

Shoppers signed up to receive text message coupons during the time of the cash mob. They moved from store to store to get the bargains. At each shop, they showed the message on their phone to get in on the deal.

An "afterglow" party at will allow shoppers to show off their purchases; those who spend at least $50 downtown during the day will be entered into a drawing for door prizes.

At Sole Sisters, for example, shoppers could buy one pair of shoes at full price and get a sale pair of shoes for a nickel.

At Haig's Jewelry, jewelry was 25 percent off. And at Holy Cannolis, if you buy six cannoli you get two cannoli free.

The cash mob was created by Independence Innovations, a Rochester-based business incubator.
