Major Road Along Rochester Hills/Shelby Township Border Closing Soon
The closure comes as crews prepare the next phase in the 96-Inch Water Transmission Main Relocation Project.

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — A portion of a major road that runs along the Rochester Hills and Shelby Township border will close down soon for an ongoing construction project, officials said.
Both sides of Dequindre Road between Avon and Hamlin roads will close down Monday, Nov. 6 as crews continue the phase of the 96-Inch Water Transmission Main Relocation Project, officials said.
The work is expected to be completed by mid-December 2024, officials said. During the closure, the detour route will take traffic to Avon Road to John R Road, south to Hamlin Road, east to Dequindre Road and vice versa.

The Dequindre Road infrastructure improvements entail:
- Installing 8,000 linear feet of 96-inch diameter welded steel pipe starting on Dequindre Road between Avon and Hamlin Roads, followed by Dequindre Road between 23 Mile Road and the Macomb Orchard Trail.
- Reconstructing Dequindre Road between Hamlin Road and the Macomb Orchard Trail.
- Replacing the elliptical corrugated metal pipe culvert with a new concrete box culvert at the Honeywell Ditch.
The 96-inch water transmission main relocation project will enhance resiliency of the water transmission system that serves multiple communities throughout Oakland, Macomb and Lapeer Counties, officials said.

In addition, the project will improve access for operations and maintenance and improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety at critical intersections. There is no planned disruption to water services to GLWA’s member partner communities during this time.
"This has been a great cooperative effort between GLWA, RCOC, Macomb Department of Roads, the cities of Rochester Hills and Rochester, and Shelby Township," Road Commission for Oakland County Chair Andrea LaLonde said. "Not only does it ensure an uninterrupted water supply for the region, but it has also improved pedestrian and traffic safety and traffic flow along the Avon and Dequindre corridor. We look forward to the additional improvements as a result of the next phase."
