ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — A Rochester Hills mother and her boyfriend are facing child abuse charges after the mother's 4-year-old daughter was injured last winter, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Kimberly Ann McGarry, 26, and Cleyde Murillo, 29, were each charged with first-degree child abuse. They were both placed in the Oakland County Jail.

McGarry was given a $150,000 bond (with 10 percent) and Murillo was given a $75,000 (with 10 percent).

Murillo was arrested on July 11 in Muskegon County where he had gone for a supervised visit with his daughter, officials said.

McGarry was arrested Tuesday near Grand Rapids by U.S. Marshals, officials said.

If convicted of first-degree child abuse, they face up to life in prison.

Investigators began looking into the case on Dec. 26, 2024 when they learned the 4-year-old girl had suffered a broken left leg and a broken right arm days earlier. Both of the injuries were in different stages of healing, officials said.

McGarry told doctors the injury happened weeks ago at the couple's home in the 46000 block of Dequindre, officials said.

McGarry said her daughter had fallen down the steps two weeks earlier, but doctors determined the injuries were not consistent with the McGarry's statements, officials said.

McGarry later told investigators conflicting versions of how the injuries happened, officials said.

McGarry eventually told investigators the injury happened on Nov. 15, 2024, and that neither she nor Murillo provided any medical attention for the child, potentially causing permanent injury to her.

Officials said McGarry has two other children, a 6-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy. They are both living with their biological father, officials said.

"There can be no excuse and no tolerance for anyone that abuses a child," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. "It is one of the more heinous crimes we encounter, and I am anxious for these suspects to be held accountable."
