Rochester Golfer Helps Team Place Second At Florida Charity Tournament

Finals were held at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and concluded on March 12.

ROCHESTER, MI — Rochester golfer Jay Phillion was part of a foursome that finished second in the Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational National Finals at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. on March 12. He teamed with three other Michigan golfers to qualify for the tournament by winning a qualifier at Oakland Hills Country Club last September.

Playing two rounds on The PLAYERS Stadium Course and two rounds on the Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in a scramble format, Phillion’s group notched scores of 63, 60, 67, and 61 for a total of 251 to secure second place at the four-day event. His teammates included Todd Pontillo of Davisburg, John Sniegowski of Cadillac, and Matt Johnston of Clarkston.

“These foursomes were among more than 12,000 amateur golfers across the country who generously supported national and local charities by playing in the Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational,” said Nicole Guidara, VP, Manager, Brand Strategy & Insights, Liberty Mutual Insurance. “We sincerely appreciate these players’ efforts to celebrate their invaluable contributions to their communities.”

The Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational National Finals is the culmination of a series of more than 75 charity golf tournaments around the country in 2016 hosted by Liberty Mutual and local and national charitable organizations that raised more than $8 million for charity.

The Liberty Mutual Insurance Invitational tournaments are single-day events featuring an 18-hole Scramble format open to men and women amateur golfers of all skill levels in the local community. Each tournament is held at a prestigious golf course in that community and concludes with a dinner and awards ceremony.

Leaders from the community, business and charitable organizations run and promote the local tournaments with support from local Liberty Mutual employees. Winning foursomes from each local tournament are invited to play in the four-day Liberty Mutual Invitational National Finals the following spring.
