ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — In the weeks after Halloween, one local dentist collected his patients' excess candy to send to troops.

Now Dr. Samer Obeid and his staff have nearly 1,000 pounds of candy to send overseas. Not bad for the first year doing the project.

"I'm a huge supporter of our military and appreciate the sacrifices they make for our freedom," said Obeid, with Rochester Hills-based Oakridge Dental Center. "This is just a small way to show our support and, hopefully, bring a smile to their faces."

The candy will go to U.S. servicemen and women and veterans at VA hospitals across the U.S.

ODC partnered with Soldiers’ Angels for its ‘Treats for Troops’ campaign and covered the cost for the candy to be shipped to a distribution center.
