Rochester Hills Hosts Annual Discovery Hike

From GSAB: The Rochester Hills Green Space Advisory Board (GSAB) will host the Seventh Annual Discovery Hike onSaturday, April 29, 2017 from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. A free one-hour guided hike scheduled for 10:00 am and 11:30 am will showcase the Harding Greenspace along the Clinton River Trail north of Avon Rd.

Residents and guests are invited to experience nature in full bloom. GSAB members, Rochester Hills Youth Council students, and volunteers will host information stations for hikers to learn about plants, animals, ecology, and the history of the City-owned open spaces.

The Harding Greenspace consists of twenty seven beautiful acres of upland woods, rolling fields, and forested wetlands. Thanks to the Green Space fund, the featured land will be protected, maintained, and restored in perpetuity.

"Because green space is important to our residents we have taken proactive steps to preserve and protect our natural features," states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. "This hike gives individuals the opportunity to see these beautiful properties in a way that is fun for the whole family."

Hike leaders will also share the history of the land and how these properties influence the health of the Clinton River. Niswander Environmental will be on hand to provide a live stewardship demonstration and present the brand new Monarch Butterfly waystation located on the property.

Sponsors include Dunhams Sports, Premier Pet Supply, and Wild Birds Unlimited.

Those interested in attending can begin the hike in the parking lot north of the medical offices at 950 W Avon Rd. Park on the northeast side of the offices and check in at the registration tent. As an added bonus, participants can test their keen observation skills by competing in the “I Spy” Nature Challenge. Maps and fun giveaways will be raffled off during the event.
