New surveillance upgrades and building entrances designed to improve safety and slow down or thwart potential intruders are under construction this summer in the Royal Oak School District.
Rick West, executive director of business and finance, shared five safety and security improvements projects Patch readers should know about.
1. Royal Oak High School Welcoming Center
A new entrance is being created at Royal Oak High School (ROHS), using space that was formerly the weight room. The renovated space will house a reception area and conference room as well as offices for the athletic director/assistant principal, athletic coordinator, police liason officer, and attendance secretary. The welcoming center is designed as a secure entry so that all visitors will pass through it prior to entering the rest of building.2. ROHS Gymnasium Bleacher Replacement
The bleachers that are being replaced lacked handrails, had gaps between sections, and were reported to have left slivers in the backsides of some who sat on them!3. Oak Ridge Secure Entry
Oak Ridge Elementary School's entrance is being renovated so that all visitors enter the office before entering the building.4. Oakland Secure Entry
Oakland Elementary School's entrance is being renovated so that all visitors enter the office before entering the building.5. ROHS video surveillance upgrades
Legacy analog systems are being converted to digital and new cameras are being added to the system."With the completion of the renovations to the ROHS, Oak Ridge, and Oakland School offices, all of the Royal Oak Schools K-12 buildings will have offices that that meet the recommendations of school security experts," West said. "These are among dozens of projects underway this summer."
