'Barktober" Festival Combines Pooches, Craft Beer

Royal Oak will host its first "Barktober" Festival on Sept. 16-17.

ROYAL OAK, MI — With the Woodward Dream Cruise and Arts, Beats and Eats in the rearview mirror, you’d think Royal Oak would be done partying for the season. But, you would be wrong. Not with the brand new Barktoberfest coming to town on Sept. 16 and 17 at Memorial Park, according to a C & G Newspaper report.

The idea of the festival, which will run between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road, is pretty simple: Bring your favorite canine friend and enjoy food and craft beer. The event will be fenced in for dog safety, while a portion of the small $5 entrance fee will go to benefit the Detroit Dog Rescue.

“With the popularity of craft beer and the focus of so many businesses on pets and Michigan-made products, Barktoberfest creates a destination event that owners and their four-legged friends can enjoy together,” said Chamber Executive Director Shelly Kemp.
“We’re having similar things that we had the last two years,” Kemp said, adding that there will be pet contests and a lot of silly family fun.
Kemp said she encourages residents to leash up their dogs — all leashes must be 6 feet long or shorter — and come out to the park to enjoy the locally brewed craft beer, food and live music.”
