WHO WAS ALEX GRAHAM: An incredible young woman who believed she could repair the world one smile at a time. Alex was a patient at Beaumont Children’s Hospital who lost her leg and ultimately her life to cancer. Her courage, strength and ability to put other’s needs ahead of her own is the beautiful legacy she left and continues to this day. She knew kids undergoing cancer treatment were no different from any other kids and should not be treated any different. Celebrate her spirit by wearing a superhero costume, the theme of our event.

WE WILL ALSO BE HONORING: Dr. Charles Main, Parade Grand Marshal and Chairman of Pediatric Oncology, for his 50 years of medical service, philanthropy and contributions to the community. Dr. Main will be retiring one week after this event. Your participation at Miles4Alex will be a great opportunity to show appreciation for all he has accomplished and also to contribute to Dr. Main’s legacy.

WHAT YOUR DOLLARS DO: Half of your dollars support The Miracle Fund at Beaumont Children’s Hospital. The Children’s Miracle Network will match the first $25,000 raised. Last year, we contributed to the Late Effects Clinic in the Pediatric Oncology Department, which assists patients who are pediatric cancer survivors and now facing medical problems related to past treatments. We also built custom adaptive bikes for children in the Rehabilitation Department who had never experienced the joy of biking before! This year, you will continue to support these programs.

In Nepal, your dollars sponsored programs providing scholarships for students in government schools and building toilets in a village with no prior waste management and no clean drinking water. This year, you will finance the construction of toilets in two more villages, build a village medical clinic, fund more scholarships for schooling and initiate a health education program for three villages.

HOW WE RAISE FUNDS: D2N asks that all participating individuals or teams raise money for our programs both at Beaumont Children’s Hospital and Nepal. Donations can be made via PayPal on our website Detroit2Nepal.org, or by mailing checks to D2N, 2035 Bayou, West Bloomfield, Michigan 48323. Teams can register on www.Crowdrise.com/miles4alex; donations can also be made through Crowdrise.

BIKE DONATIONS: Bring old bikes and helmets for donation to American Cycle and Fitness located at Royal Oak, Novi, or Pontiac. With the help of Summer in the City, these will be distributed to children in Detroit.
