Ice Skate At The Detroit Zoo

The Detroit Zoo's winter rink is open for business.

ROYAL OAK, MI Sharpen up those ice skates! The Detroit Zoo has a brand new ice skating rink in front of the Polk Penguin Conservation Center, according to a news release.

The 1,548-square-foot Winter Rink can accommodate 31 skaters and is open now through February 2017. Guests aged 4 and up can skate between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Skaters under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Cost: $3. If you need to rent skates (a limited number of rentals are available) the price is $7, and includes a 25-minute skating session.

Interesting Detroit Zoo fact: The Winter Rink isn't made of ice! It's composed of a synthetic plastic called Glice® – a material composed of heat-pressed layers of polymers – zero water or electricity is required for operation.
