Royal Oak Closes Main Street Friday Night

City leaders are promoting local businesses by creating a 'car-free safe zone' Friday night.

ROYAL OAK, MI — Anyone that’s ever spent a few minutes in Royal Oak knows downtown is busy, especially on a nice spring Friday night. Ducking traffic can, quite frankly, be a challenge. But that’s going to change this Friday, May 12.

From 7-11 p.m., the city will shutdown Main Street between Eleven Mile Road and Fourth Street. The idea is to encourage exploration of local businesses, restaurants and bars. City officials say the “car-free safe zone” is open to musicians and street performers, too.

The weather for Friday night looks good. The National Weather Service is calling for a partly sunny day with a high of about 62. So, grab your best walking shoes, a stroller for the kids or a sturdy leash for the dog and make your way to downtown Royal Oak.
