ROYAL OAK, MI — At this point, nearly every person in the galaxy is aware that Donald Trump was elected President. But what about the rest of the election results in your town? Here are a few Royal Oak/Oakland County election highlights:
1. Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison got a new gig! Ellison, the longtime Democrat mayor of Royal Oak, is off to the State House of Representatives. Ellison, a Democrat, edged out Randy LeVasseur, a Republican, for the 26th District seat. Note: After Ellison steps down as mayor, the commissioners will vote one of their members to serve the remaining one year left on Ellison’s mayoral term.
2. The community is huge fans of Royal Oak police, fire and emergency medical workers. 79% of voters were in favor of renewing 3.975 mills for 5 years for police, fire and emergency medical services. The renewal raises approximately $9 million bucks a year and goes into effect Jan. 1, 2017.

3. Royal Oak Schools are getting more money. Voters overwhelmingly elected to restore an 18-mill operating levy on non-homestead properties. The millage will affect buildings other than resident-occupied homes. Think businesses, commercial properties and rental houses.
4. Royal Oak voted against bringing mass transit to Metro Detroit - but just barely. The Regional Transit Authority millage would have funded a history-making mass transit system connecting Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Oakland County ultimately defeated the proposal with 293,510 "no" votes compared to 292,401 "yes" votes.
