MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Authorities rescued a Royal Oak man from a capsized canoe in Lake St. Clair this month.

The man was reportedly fishing when the wind picked up. As he tried to maneuver through rough water in his canoe, the waves caused him to capsize. He was in approximately 8 feet of water and was not wearing a life jacket.

He was able to hold on to his canoe until help arrived, authorities said.

“As the summer comes to the end, please remember to stay safe," he said in a release. "A life jacket can save your life, especially as the weather changes and lake and air temperatures start to drop.”

A type V inflatable life jacket is a great option for people involved in water activities such as hunting, fishing, and sail boating, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office said. A type V life jacket must be worn at all times to comply with the state life jacket requirement.
