Royal Oak Seeks Public Input On Downtown Park
The two-acre park will become a centerpiece of downtown Royal Oak, city officials say.

ROYAL OAK, MI — The City of Royal Oak is inviting the community to provide input on the look, feel and programming of a future two-acre downtown park. Two visual preference survey sessions will take place at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., November 3, 2018 that are free and open to the public.
“This park will be a community staple in downtown Royal Oak and we encourage all residents to join us in helping plan for our exciting new downtown park,” said Royal Oak City Community Engagement Specialist Judy Davids. “The first session, which took place Oct. 6, was very insightful. Our Nov. 3 gathering is unique to the first round and will help us determine more specifics for the park. Since the park is not designed yet, this feedback is crucial.”
Landscape architects and planners from Nowak & Fraus Engineers will facilitate the two visual preference survey sessions, which will each take approximately 90 minutes. The surveys will consist of a series of park images that participants must score according to their preference using an iClicker. Public input will be used to help make decisions about the future environment and programming of the downtown park. The surveys will take place at Royal Oak Middle School (709 North Washington Avenue).
The Rethink Royal Oak development began earlier this year with the groundbreaking of the parking garage. The next stages will include the beginning of construction for the new City Hall and police station in November and December respectively; more details will be provided soon.
Projected timeline for project completion:
- Parking Garage: June 2019
- City Hall: 2020
- Police Station: 2020
- Downtown Park: 2021
Residents can learn more about the downtown park and RSVP for the survey sessions at www.romi.gov/downtownpark.
