Week Ahead: HRO Benefit, Shakespeare in the Park and More

There's a lot going on in Royal Oak this week. Here are five things you should know as you go about your week.

It's a busy week in Royal Oak, as usual. What do you have planned?

Here are five things you should know as you go about your week:

1. Phone & mail scam prevention event on Monday: This event is presented by the Senior Brigade, a program of the Michigan Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. Learn how to recognize common scams initiated over the phone or by mail/e-mail, reduce unwanted phone calls and junk mail and show you how to report a problem or scam. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Royal Oak Senior Community Center at 3500 Marais. This event is free, but registration is required at 248-246-3900.

2. Mad World with One Royal Oak on Tuesday: One Royal Oak, the campaign encouraging voters to pass a human rights ordinance (HRO), is hosting a "Mad Men" themed benefit at Cafe Muse, 418 S. Washington Ave. The festivities will include a wine tasting and light hors d'oeuvres with the purchase of a $35 ticket. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1960s attire. Tickets can be purchased either at Cafe Muse or online, at https://secure.actblue.com/page/madworld.

3. Summer concert at St. Mary on Wednesday: The Brunswick Brawlers (vintage Americana music) free concert starts at 7 p.m. on the lawn in front of the St. Mary parish office at 730 S Lafayette Avenue. Come hungry because Mean Weenie and Treat Dreams food trucks will be there. There's face painting for the kids, too. This event is rain or shine.

4. Art Explored "Live" on Thursday:  The Detroit School of Rock & Pop, Dave Hamilton Band (funky prog rock) and the Twistin’ Tarantulas (punk rockabilly) are the music lineup for Thursday's free concert in front of the Royal Oak Public Library. There will also be a fashion show. Click here for show times.

5. Shakespeare in the Park opens on Thursday: Water Works Theatre Company presents the 13th annual Shakespeare in the Park, Aug. 1-11. Michigan's biggest and best outdoor professional theatre event will feature two weeks of theatrical fun in the middle of the tree-filled 28-acre Starr Jaycee Park. Tickets ($8-$20) are on sale now for The Merry Wives of Windsor and Much Ado About Nothing and can be purchased online at www.waterworkstheatre.com.
