1. Coast Guard to test oil spill tracking models in Straits of Mackinac (mlive.com) — Sault Ste. Marie’s Great Lakes Oil Spill Center of Expertise is leading eight new Coast Guard-funded projects to improve how oil spills are tracked and handled, especially in icy conditions. With testing planned in the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Michigan, this research could shape future protections for local waters, Line 5 response planning, and the broader eastern U.P. shoreline.
   

2. Michigan State Police Eighth District awards employee of the year to officers and support staff (kbear102.com) — A Michigan State Police officer based at the Sault Ste. Marie post, MCO Bruce Brown, has been named one of the Eighth District’s Employees of the Year for his leadership and work in construction zones. He’s honored alongside Trooper Ryan Rossler from Iron Mountain and civilian staffer Tammy Williamson from St. Ignace, underscoring the Upper Peninsula’s strong public safety team.
   

3. Brimley man arrested (mininggazette.com) — Law enforcement based in Sault Ste. Marie report that a 28-year-old Brimley man has been arrested and extradited to Michigan on multiple child sexually abusive activity and computer crime charges. He was arraigned in 91st District Court with a $250,000 bond and strict conditions, and is scheduled to appear again on January 12 while remaining presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
   

4. Bobcat breach: Feline scales fence, invades Mich. prison grounds (corrections1.com) — A bobcat caused a stir at Chippewa Correctional Facility near Sault Ste. Marie after scaling the fence, racing around the grounds, and perching in a maple tree for about an hour. Staff and DNR officers eventually herded the healthy wild cat back into nearby forest, where bobcats are common but rarely seen.
