Department issues safety tips for children and parents for upcoming Halloween weekend

The St. Clair Shores Fire Department took to social media recently, sharing some important Halloween safety tips to children and adults on the cityβs Facebook page.
The post highlighted recommendations issued by the U.S. Fire Administrationβs website, and informed readers of statistics linked to Halloween and the days surrounding the popular holiday.
According to data released by the U.S. Fire Administration, 10,300 fires were reported during the three-day period surrounding Halloween.
These fires resulted in 25 deaths, 125 injuries and $83 Million in property loss.
The following recommendations are aimed and helping to curb these numbers and make Halloween a fun and safe time of year for children and adults.
Hereβs a few of these tips:
- Choose a costume without long trailing fabric. This can cause a child to trip or may touch flames in jack-oβ-lanterns or other decorations.
- If you make your own costume, use materials that wonβt catch on fire easily if they come in contact with heat or flame.
- Give your children flashlights or glow sticks so they can see where they are walking.
- Keep decorations away from candles, light bulbs or heaters.
- Consider using flame-less candles or glow sticks in your jack-oβ-lantern.
- Keep exits clear of decorations.
