Officers Chase Car Through Macomb Co. Golf Course, Wrong-Way On I-94: Prosecutor

Prosecutors said the suspect broke into multiple homes before carjacking a man and leading officers on a wild chase through Macomb County.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — A man is facing 13 charges in connection with multiple home invasions, a carjacking and a police chase through multiple Macomb County communities, according to prosecutors.

Thomas Edward Tackett, 52, of Fort Gratiot, was charged with carjacking (up to life felony), four counts of first-degree home invasion (20-year felony), second-degree home invasion (15-year felony), fleeing officers (5-year felony), malicious destruction of private property (5-year felony), malicious destruction of a building (5-year felony), assault with a dangerous weapon (5-year felony),resisting officers (2-year felony), driving with a suspended license (93-day misdemeanor) and reckless driving (93-day misdemeanor).

He was also charged as a habitual offender - fourth offense, which requires a mandatory 25-year prison sentence and the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted.

He was placed in jail without bond. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 21.

Prosecutors said the incident happened on Monday in Harrison Township and St. Clair Shores where Tackett committed a series of violent and reckless acts.

Prosecutors said Tackett broke into five homes — four while the occupants were present — two in St. Clair Shores and two in Harrison Township and a fifth unoccupied residence in Harrison Township.

He also carjacked a man in Harrison Township and led officers on a high-speed chase through the St. Clair Shores Golf Course, the wrong way on Interstate 94 and through a homeowner’s backyard, prosecutors said.

Tackett went on to ditch the car and led officers on a foot chase in Harrison Township where he was eventually arrested by officers.

"This defendant’s alleged actions represent an alarming and dangerous pattern of criminal behavior," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. "The charges are extremely serious and reflect a complete disregard for the safety and well-being of our community. My office will pursue these charges to the fullest extent of the law to ensure the public is protected and justice is served."
