Woman, 28, Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash On I-696 In Metro Detroit: Police

Police said the 28-year-old woman was trying to put gas in her car on the freeway's shoulder when an SUV struck her.

WARREN, MI — A 28-year-old Madison Heights woman was hit and killed on Interstate 696 in Macomb County last weekend, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

The crash happened at 1:15 a.m. last Sunday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 696 near Hoover Road in Warren, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Nateria Smith was trying to put gas in her car that was parked on the freeway's shoulder when she was hit by a Chevy SUV.

The driver of the Chevy did not stop, return to the scene or call 911 to report the crash, prosecutors said.

Smith was taken to Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital Warren Campus where where she died, prosecutors said.

Witnesses described the vehicle that struck Smith to police, prosecutors said.

Police then located a vehicle with damage that matched the debris left at the accident site and fit witnesses' description parked outside a Warren home, prosecutors said.

Officers spoke with 36-year-old Meghan Hamilton at the home and arrested her in connection with the crash, prosecutors said.

Hamilton was charged with failure to stop at the scene of a crash resulting in serious injury or death, which is a 5-year felony. She was placed in jail with a $50,000 bond. If bond is posted, she must wear a GPS tether and cannot use alcohol or drugs.

Her next court date is scheduled for Aug. 28.

"Remaining at the scene of a collision is not only required by law, but also a fundamental responsibility that ensures help can arrive quickly and that the facts can be fully understood," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said. "At this stage, the defendant has been charged, and the case will proceed through the court process."
