5 Things to Know in Troy This Week

1. The City of Troy Planning Commission meets at City Hall (500 W. Big Beaver Rd., Troy) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to hold a public hearing on a special use and preliminary site plan approval review on a proposed outlet containing Starbucks and Qdoba franchises at the northwest corner of the John R and 14 Mile roads intersection, in the Oakland Mall. 2. Do you need to get rid of your cans and bottles this week? The Troy High School Colt Drumline will collect them from you. Just e-mail randa.seifeldin@gmail.com with your address in Troy and when they'll be ready for pick-up, set your bottles and cans out on your porch. You'll be helping them raise money to pay for the Marching Band's beautiful new set of drums.

3. If you haven't paid your 2012 winter taxes to the city, you have until Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to avoid additional charges. Payments by check may be made any time using the secure drop boxes located outside the east (walk-up) and west (drive-up) entrances to City Hall or at the Treasurer’s Office Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. For more information, visit the city's website.

4. Gas is on the way up in the Troy area. According to the AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in Metro Detroit is $3.73 on Saturday morning — up eight cents from $3.65 last week. Around town, the lowest price you'll find is $3.66 at the Speedway on John R.
