Coach Scott: Athens' District Title is 'Something We Can Build Upon'

The Red Hawks fell to Yante Maten-led Lahser High in the state semifinals Monday, 70-61, but it may not be the last you hear of this team for some time.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — Going into halftime down by just two points to Lahser High on Monday, it was obvious that Troy Athens High felt confident on the court against the favored Knights.

However, after falling behind by nine points by the end of the third quarter, it was also obvious that an upset was not in the cards.

The Red Hawks' varsity boys basketball team fell on Monday, 70-61, in the Region 8 semifinals against a Knights team led by star junior Yante Maten and his 24 points.

Coach David Scott said that the team — the first MHSAA Class A District Champions at Athens since 2000 — could be expected to build upon its success in coming years. While the Red Hawks finished with a 6-17 overall record this season, sophomores John Van Hoef, Devin Terry and Tim Shayoka helped pace the team in the district championship game against Waterford Mott, he said.
