Elderly Residents Targeted In Home Invasion Scheme: Troy PD

TROY, MI β€” Suspects are entering the homes of elderly residents in Troy under the guise of doing utility work, Troy Police said Thursday. The department is investigating three related incidents that took place in the city on Wednesday.

Police said around 12:53 p.m. Wednesday, a 91-year-old man in the 2300 block of Chesapeake was home alone when a man and a woman wearing reflective vests knocked on the his door and requested access to the home's water meter or electrical hookup.

When the man let the two inside the home, he later found one of them in his bedroom, going through a jewelry box, police said. The homeowner confronted the two and they left without taking anything, according to police.

A 76-year-old in the 1400 block of Key West was the victim of a second home invasion, police said, when a man and woman requested access to their home to check the water around 1:16 p.m. Wednesday. Police said the victim was distracted by one of the suspects when the other entered a bedroom and stole a small safe containing jewelry and savings bonds.

In a third home invasion, that police said took place around 12:36 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of Boyd, an 84-year-old woman was approached by a man in reflective vest asking about sinks in her home. The man tried to enter her home but she refused him entry, police said.

Police said that in each incident, the man is described as a 40- to 50-year-old man with an olive complexion and dark hair and wearing a green reflective vest. The female suspect was described by police as 40- to 50 years old with olive complexion and dark hair.

The suspects' vehicle was described by police as a light colored sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Cavalier.

Each of the home invasions is believed to be related, police said.
