Fireworks Cause Injury, Fire Over Weekend: Oakland County Sheriff

The Oakland County Sheriff said a 1-year-old was hit by fireworks and, in a separate incident, a garage caught fire due to fireworks.

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — Oakland County Sheriff's deputies were called out to investigate a pair of incidents related to fireworks over the weekend.

Deputies said they, along with the Waterford Regional Fire Department and Star EMS, responded to the 400 block of Second Ave. around 8:17 p.m. Friday following reports that a 1-year-old child was injured by fireworks.

Deputies said family members told them that fireworks had been ignited in the street and one firework appeared to malfunction, propelling toward the home where the child was sitting on the porch, striking him on the neck and chest.

The fire was extinguished, deputies said. The fire began in the garage and was contained to the garage, according to deputies. The Brandon Fire Lieutenant requested the help of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigator Unit to determine the cause and origin investigation, deputies said.

When the investigator arrived on scene, the Brandon Fire Department had discovered fireworks had been ignited and the spent boxes placed next to the garage, deputies said. The fireworks re-ignited and resulted in a garage fire, according to deputies.
