Police: Shoplifting is Not a University Assignment

Troy Police issued citations to Sterling Heights tandem at Sears after their creative alibis.

Women claimed shoplifting was a university assignment

Two Sterling Heights women, ages 22 and 23 respectively, were issued citations for third-degree retail fraud at Sears (300 W. 14 Mile Rd., Troy) on Tuesday night after what they told Troy Police was part of a wayward university assignment. Police said that they shoplifted 10 items worth a total of $206.40 and apologized afterward.

Teens try to cross freeway on foot, but don't shake police

Two Detroit men, Devonte Javon Tucker, 18 and Ted Bendo Oliver-Price, 19 respectively, were arraigned on felony charges of attempted auto theft after Troy police intercepted their alleged attempt to break in to a car parked at Charles Schwab (305 W. Big Beaver Rd., Troy) on Monday evening.

Employees at the building reported the incident to police in progress and when officers arrived, the men fled toward Interstate-75, according to police. A Troy police officer jumped the fence bordering the freeway after the two men attempted to cross on foot, locating one of them and taking him into custody without incident.

A lengthy search for the second suspect ensued with help from Clawson police officers and a Bloomfield Township officer and his K-9 partner. The second subject was eventually apprehended near Industrial Row and Coolidge.

Tucker’s bond was set at $10,000 or cash surety and Oliver-Price’s bond was set at $20,000 or cash surety. The charge carries a maximum sentence of two and a half years jail. Both will have preliminary exam hearings before Judge William E. Bolle of the 52-4 District Court in Troy on March 11.

Drunken driver tested double over the legal limit

Troy police arrested a drunken driver who breath tested at 0.16 percent blood alcohol content, double the Michigan legal limit of 0.08, on Tuesday night at I-75 and West Big Beaver Road.

Troy police responding to the call of a concerned citizen saw the car swerving in and out of the left lane on southbound I-75. The car was stopped and the officer noted that the driver, a 30-year-old Carleton woman, smelled of intoxicants.

After failing sobriety tests, she was arrested.
