Summer Events at the Troy Public Library

The Troy Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program is in full swing!  “Groundbreaking Reads” runs until August 8 (register online at troylibrary.info if you haven’t joined yet) and features weekly prizes of $25 Somerset Collection gift cards as well as a grand prize of a Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi and case, all courtesy of the Friends of the Troy Public Library.

To qualify for the weekly and grand prizes, simply submit a brief review of each title you read (in print, eBook, or audiobook).  Winners will be chosen at random from all reviews received.  The more books you read, the better your chance of winning a prize!

For ideas about what to read, check out our Bookletters book lists, pick up a copy of BookPage from the New Books shelves in Adult Services, or stop by the Adult Information Services desk.  Happy reading!

New Technology Comes to Adult Information Services

Find out what's happening in Troyfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Are you working on finding your roots, and need to search vintage newspapers on microfilm for those elusive obituaries and death notices? Or maybe you’d like to find out what the major headlines were on the day you were born?  The Troy Library’s Adult Information Services Technology Center is the proud owner of a brand-new microfilm-microfiche reader/printer, made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Troy Public Library

This updated technology allows users to select individual articles or photos, refine the images, save them to a single page, and print, email, or save them to a portable storage device.  The 24-inch monitor makes viewing easy, and the Windows-based software is familiar and user-friendly.

So come to the Technology Center in Adult Services and take a look at some of history’s most iconic headlines (the library owns the full-image edition of the New York Timesfrom September, 1851 through 2006 and The Detroit News from 1975-2010) or dig into your own family’s past.  You may not be related to royalty, but now it’s much easier to find out!

Come to a Troy Public Library Program in July!

Baseball Cards Through the Years with Jeff Kless

On July 17 at 6:30 pm, baseball card historian Jeff Kless will visit the Troy Public Library to discuss the evolution of baseball cards from the 1860's to today.  Jeff will review licensing changes in the baseball card industry, as well as baseball card companies that have come and gone (and why they did).

For current baseball-card-collecting enthusiasts, Jeff will tell you how to start, maintain, and sell your collection, and use eBay to manage it.  At the conclusion of the program, Jeff will be available to assess and appraise small baseball card collections for individuals.  Save your seat now by registering online at troylibrary.info or calling the library at248.524.3542.

Gerald will discuss Kindle, Nook, and Smashwords, explaining how to set up accounts, upload files for publication and structure payment information.

Paddle Now, Chores Later with Doc Fletcher

Join us at the Troy Public Library on Tuesday, July 30, at 6:30 pm, as PBS-featured author and life-long Michigan resident Doc Fletcher presents his hour-long canoeing and kayaking program, Paddle Now, Chores Later. Among the rivers featured will be the Pere Marquette, as featured in Doc’s new book, Michigan's Pere Marquette River: Paddling Through its History. The program will also focus on the impact on and recovery of the Two Hearted River from the third largest wildfire in Michigan history.

You don't have to be a paddling enthusiast to enjoy the program, but you may become one by the time the evening ends. At the end of the presentation a drawing will be held for a gift certificate, donated by canoe liveries throughout Michigan, good for a canoe or kayak day trip. Canoeing brochures & state maps will also be available to help patrons plan future paddling trips.  Register online at troylibrary.info or call 248.524.3542 to reserve your spot for this popular program.
