Troy Athens Students Break Record for Charity Donations

Last week, Troy Athens High School held a pep rally to celebrate a very successful end to Charity Week, during which students raised tens of thousands of dollars for the nonprofit organization Angels of Hope.

The local branch of the national NPO, which provides financial assistance to children and those who love and care for them as they battle cancer, was "beyond thrilled" to receive news that the Athens community smashed its goal of $28,000 with a grand total donation of $41,056.41.

"Teenagers never cease to amaze me! Great job Shawn, Kristy, Athens StuCo and all the students and faculty for pouring their hearts into this!" wrote one fan on the Angels of Hope Facebook fan Page.

Students could participate in a number of charitable activities organized by the school's Student Congress all week long in order to raise money, including events at local businesses.

A preliminary total was announced at a pep rally on Friday to raucous applause from students, as captured in a video posted online. 

The grand total well-eclipsed last year's Charity Week benefit for another local NPO, I've Got Your Backs, by nearly $6,000. for the Athens community.
