Troy Church Duped Out Of $4,500: Police

The church received a $4,500 check for hurricane relief, but refunded the money to a man claiming it was supposed to be for $45.

TROY, MI — Troy’s Kensington Church was recently victimized by someone claiming to want to help hurricane victims. A financial officer of the East Square Lake Road church told police they had received a $4,500 check for hurricane relief last month.

On Oct. 30, police reports said a man identifying himself as “Jamie Walsh” of Memphis, Tennessee, called the church and explained that he meant to send a check for $45. Kensington Church officials then electronically refunded him $4,500, reports said.

Leaders of the church were later informed that the $4,500 check they had received was fraudulent, according to police. Reports didn’t specify if the church was able to recover the funds.
