Flash Mob! Troy High Band 'Walking on Sunshine' at Troy Public Library

The flash mob is part of Troy Bands' "Take it to the Streets" initiative to help support local music programs.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday, library patrons got a special treat as students from the Troy High School band program "flash mobbed" the library.

The performance, which is part of Troy Bands' "Taking it to the Streets" program, helped celebrate being in the new year with peppy rendition of "Walking on Sunshine."

"Troy High had sent me information on 'Taking it to the Streets' – the program they do to go out in the community – and one of the choices on the list was a flash mob," Library Director Cathy Russ said. "I love flash mobs, so I was like, we are so doing that."

Russ said the group was a pleasure to work with last week as they ironed out the logistics of performing and marching through such a small space.

"It was a fun way to kick off being open on Saturdays," she said. "I can't say enough good about those kids. They're great."

Troy Bands launched "Taking it to the Streets" in November as a way to push music off the stage and bring it directly to the community.

"Through this effort, we hope to open the eyes of young adults to the importance of connecting with and giving back to one’s community – specifically, in this case, while sharing their musical talents,” Troy High School Director of Bands Brian Nutting said in a recent press release. "We have a very passionate and skilled group of student musicians anxious to entertain."

Nutting added that any proceeds from the performances will go toward providing services, music and even refurbished instruments to schools with limited resources.
