Troy Police Report to Home Invasions, Drug Offenses and More

The following information about police incidents is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media releases.

Assist other department

June 6, 2:14 a.m.: A Troy Officer and his K-9 partner, Tiko, assisted Birmingham PD by conducting a K-9 track at the scene of a Larceny from Auto. 

Credit, check, identity theft, other fraud

2000 block of Shadywood, June 1, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Complainant reports he placed two pieces of mail, each containing a personal check, in his mailbox for pick-up by the mail carrier. Neither item reached its intended destination. On June 7, he learned another area police department had arrested an individual who was in possession of one of the complainant’s missing personal checks. It is believed the suspect intended to use the account information to make counterfeit checks. The investigation is on-going and prosecution is expected.

6000 block of Crabapple, June 5, 2:00 p.m.: Elderly complainants report that they received a phone call from someone who claimed to be their grandson. The caller said he was in jail in Maryland for drunk driving and needed $3,200 for bond money. Shortly after the first call, they received a second call from a subject claiming to be the grandson’s attorney. The complainants advised the "attorney" that they could not afford $3,200, but they did agree to send $1,795. The couple sent $1795 to the Dominican Republic via Western Union before realizing they had been scammed. They did not verify the story before sending the money because the fake "grandson" had asked them not to tell his parents.

Macy’s, 500 W. Fourteen Mile, June 7, 7:39 p.m.: Troy Officers arrested a 31-year-old Southfield man for Fraudulent Use of a Financial Transaction Device. The 31-year-old attempted to purchase nineteen articles of Polo clothing, which has a retail value of $1,688, using the Macy’s credit account of a 77-year-old Jacksonville, Florida man. The Jacksonville man confirmed he did not give anyone permission to use his account.  

3000 block of Dominique, May 28, 10:31 a.m.: When the complainant received a bill for $531.38 from Verizon Wireless she contacted the company and learned someone had used her name and social security number to purchase five smart phones.

6000 block of Tamarack, May 29, 1 p.m.: Complainant reports someone used his identity to open a Home Depot charge card. A fraudulent $7,000 purchase was made using the card. 

Drugs

Jaycee Park, 1775 E. Long Lake, June 6, 5:22 p.m.: Officers were dispatched to the park when a caller reported two men playing with a handgun near a baseball diamond. The caller reported one of the men had put the handgun in the trunk of a car. Officers located and made contact with the man. He advised officers the handgun in question was actually a BB gun. Officers checked the item and confirmed that it was a BB gun. When checking the BB gun officers found beer, marijuana and narcotic paraphernalia in the trunk of the car. The 18-year-old Troy man was arrested for minor in possession of alcohol, possession of narcotic paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

I-75 and W. Fourteen Mile, June 7, 11:01 p.m.: A Troy Officer stopped a vehicle which was observed leaving its lane of travel and driving completely on the shoulder of the roadway. Following an investigation, both the driver and a passenger in the vehicle were arrested. The driver, an 18-year-old Troy male, was arrested for possession of a hallucinogen (psilocybin mushrooms), possession of marijuana and possession of narcotic paraphernalia. The passenger, an 18-year-old female from Troy, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. She does not have a prescription for the medication, used to treat ADHD, which she was in possession of. 

E. Big Beaver and Rochester, June 10, 12:37 a.m.: After Troy Officers stopped a vehicle which had a headlight out, they discovered the driver had a suspended license and no insurance. The vehicle smelled of marijuana and an investigation revealed the driver had given two baggies of marijuana to a 15-year-old male, who was a passenger in the vehicle, and told him to hide them in his shoe. The 15-year-old was not charged, however the driver, a 29-year-old Detroit woman, was arrested for possession of marijuana, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and driving while license suspended. She admitted to asking the 15-year-old to hide the marijuana for her during the traffic stop. 

Driving under influence of alcohol/drugs

Crooks and W. Long Lake, June 6, 11:59 p.m.: A citizen telephoned Troy Dispatch after observing a man stumble out of a convenience store, get into a car, and drive away. The citizen was on the phone with police when the vehicle he was following crashed into a road sign. The citizen stood by until Troy Police arrived. Officers made contact with the suspected drunk driver who had glassy eyes, smelled of intoxicants and difficulty standing up on his own. After failing sobriety tests, the 25-year-old Troy male was arrested for operating while intoxicated (second offense). A blood test was administered.  

Rochester and E. Long Lake, June 7 12:36 a.m.: A Troy Officer was dispatched to the area after a citizen reported a suspected drunk driver. A Troy Officer located and stopped the suspect vehicle. The driver had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and smelled of intoxicants. When asked for her driver’s license, the driver gave the officer a debit card. After performing poorly on sobriety tests, the 31-year-old Shelby Township resident was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were .13 percent.

I-75 and Rochester, June 7, 12:41 a.m.: Troy Dispatch received a phone call from a driver who stated he was following a vehicle which had struck his vehicle and then fled the scene. A neighboring jurisdiction, monitoring Troy PD radio transmissions, located and stopped the hit-and-run vehicle. The driver had poor balance and slurred speech. He provided officers with a name which was later determined to be false. Narcotic paraphernalia, marijuana, a partially full bottle of vodka, various prescription pills (later determined to be controlled substances), and a "Batman"-shaped hand held edged weapon were found in the hit-and-run vehicle. When the driver’s real name was determined through fingerprinting it was discovered he has two outstanding Troy warrants. Troy Officers arrested the 24-year-old Troy resident for operating under the influence of drugs, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, hinder and obstruct a police officer by false identification, failure to stop and identify at an accident and carrying a concealed weapon. A blood test was administered and results are pending.  

I-75 and W. Wattles, June 9, 2:03 a.m.: Troy Officers stopped a vehicle that was having difficulty maintaining its lane of travel and crossed lane markers several times. When contact was made with the driver, officers noted the strong odor of marijuana and intoxicants coming from within the vehicle. The driver had very bloodshot/glassy eyes and was unable to correctly recite the alphabet. The 21-year-old Detroit man failed sobriety tests and was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were .09 percent.

E. Big Beaver and Roundtree, June 9, 3:26 a.m.: A Troy Officer observed a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Big Beaver. The officer activated the emergency lights and pulled in front of the vehicle. The vehicle stopped facing west in the east lanes of Big Beaver. When officers made contact with the driver he stared straight ahead and did not respond to the officers. The 30-year-old Sterling Heights man smelled very strongly of intoxicants, his face was flushed, his eyes were glassy, red, and watery and his speech was slurred. When he exited his vehicle an officer had to hold onto his arm and guide him because he kept losing his balance. The driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Breath test results were .21 percent.     

Home invasions

4000 block of Navin Field, June 5, 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.: When the complainant returned home she found the rear door wall had been forced open and the home had been entered. Cash and jewelry were stolen. 

3000 block of Oxley, June 6, 11:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.: The complainant returned home and found his garage door open, the door from the garage into the residence open and the family room sliding glass door smashed. The master bedroom had been ransacked; jewelry and cash were stolen. 

Larcenies

2000 block of Somerset, May 31, 12 noon to 4 p.m.: Complaint reports a black men’s Schwinn bicycle, a white women’s Schwinn bicycle and two pair of Nike shoes were stolen from the hallway of her apartment complex.

Oakland Mall, 412 W. Fourteen Mile, June 5, 2 p.m.: A customer reported she accidentally left her cellular phone on a table in the food court. Following an investigation by Oakland Mall Security and the Troy Police Department, a 34-year-old Roseville male, who is employed as a custodian at the mall, was arrested for larceny from a building. The 34-year-old works for a contracted maintenance company.

2000 block of Coolidge, May 8-9: Apartment resident reports the lock was forced open on his basement storage locker and his black Trek mountain bicycle was stolen.

Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois, June 6, 12:20 to 1:20 p.m.: Complainant reports he placed his clothing and wallet in a gym locker and secured the locker with a combination lock. When he returned to the locker room, the combination lock had been removed from his locker and his wallet was missing. The wallet contained the complainant’s driver’s license, three credit cards and some cash. 

Larcenies from Autos

3290 W. Big Beaver, June 6-7, 7 p.m. to 12 p.m.: Complainant reports his locked Porsche 911 was broken into and the in-dash radio and both front seats were stolen. 

3000 block of Pasadena, June 7-8, 5:30 p.m. to 9 a.m.: A Garmin GPS unit was stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in the complainant’s driveway. 

Retail Fraud

JCPenney, 700 W. Fourteen Mile Rd., June 5, 7:01 p.m. Troy Officer issued citations for retail fraud to two Sterling Heights women, ages 28 and 34. Both women removed JCPenney bags from their purses and placed clothing they had shoplifted inside the bags. Both women had a child with them at the time of the incident. The 34-year-old also removed shoes from the child that was with her and switched them for a new pair of Nikes. The child’s old shoes were left in the Nike box. A total of $370 worth of merchandise was stolen and recovered. 

Kohl’s, 500 John R, June 6, 2:19 p.m.: A Troy Officer issued a citation for retail fraud to a 37-year-old Warren woman who had shoplifted five articles of clothing. The clothing, valued at $126.99, had been concealed in the woman’s purse.

Kohl’s, 500 John R, June 6, 5:30 p.m.: A 30-year-old Madison Heights woman was issued a citation for retail fraud. She shoplifted three articles of clothing and one piece of jewelry with a total value of $92. 

Macy’s, 500 W. Fourteen Mile, June 7, 3:38 p.m.: Troy Officers issued a citation for retail fraud to a 22-year-old Pontiac woman who shoplifted a pair of shorts and a tank top. The woman concealed the merchandise in her purse. 

Nordstrom, 2850 W. Big Beaver, June 7, 6:59 p.m.: A 19-year-old Macomb woman was issued a citation for retail fraud after shoplifting two tank tops with a total value of $61. 

Miscellaneous

1000 block of VanCourtland, June 6, 4:29 p.m. A 20-year-old Detroit male and a 27-year-old male from Berkley were issued citations for soliciting without a permit. A neighbor had called police after the solicitors asked his daughter, as she walked down the street, if she was over 21-years-old. The solicitors explained they were only checking to see is she was old enough to be a sponsor for the organization they were soliciting for. Troy Officers had issued the pair a warning for the same offense the day prior.
