Former Lakeland Football Star Recipient of Postgraduate Big Ten Scholarship

Univeristy of Michigan football player and Lakeland High School alumni Steve Wilson was recognized this week as one the inaugural recipients of a postgraduate Big Ten scholarship.

Wilson, along with women's swimmer Val Barthelemy, of Ann Arbor, were selected as the University of Michigan recipients by a committee of faculty and staff from the institution, according to mgoblue.com.

The two students were awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements, according to the report, to continue their education at a graduate degree program.

Wilson, who plans to attend medical school after earning his degree in cellular and molecular biology this spring, was a walk-on cornerback for the Michigan football team, according to the report.

In a previous White Lake-Highland Patch story, Wilson commented on his college football experience.

"Being on the U-M football team will stay with me forever because it means being a part of something greater than any individual," he said perviously. "The fact that I'll be able to look back and say that I was a part of such a great tradition is truly special to me."
