Man Charged In Fatal Oakland County Crash: Sheriff
Investigators believe speed and alcohol played a role in the crash.

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, MI — A Sterling Heights man has been charged in connection with a fatal Oakland County crash, according to the sheriff's office.
The crash happened on Sept. 5 at 7:40 p.m. on Pontiac Trail at Martin Parkway in Commerce Township, officials said.
Officials said 51-year-old Kevin Joseph Koldys was driving a 2021 Lexus RC north on M-5 where he drove off the road and through several hundred feet of tall grass and weeds.

He eventually got back onto the road and jumped the curb in a roundabout and struck a 2017 Chevy Trax, officials said.
The impact of the crash pushed the SUV into a third vehicle, a 2021 Honda CRV, officials said.

The driver of the Chevy Trax, 30-year-old Matthew Szakal, was killed in the crash, officials said.
The driver of the Honda, a 64-year-old Wixom woman, suffered minor injuries in the crash, officials said.
Officials said both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Investigators believe speed and alcohol played a role in the crash.
Koldys also suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was arrested and has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death. He was placed in jail with a $25,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 30.
